In September 2025, openRxiv and Dryad announced a new partnership and technological integration enabling researchers to publish data on Dryad as part of the bioRxiv preprint posting workflow. Six months on, we’re excited to extend our collaboration to include medRxiv as well.

Sharing data alongside research articles supports rigorous, reproducible, and trustworthy research, and accelerates the speed of scientific advancement through data reuse. Sharing data alongside preprints helps demonstrate the reliability of research before and during peer review, and empowers researchers to build on new discoveries sooner. By integrating data publication with preprint posting, openRxiv and Dryad aim to make transparent research best practices feel simple and accessible for busy researchers.

Now, when an author posts a preprint to medRxiv, they’ll have the opportunity to upload their research data directly to Dryad. Before becoming public on medRxiv, each preprint undergoes a two-step screening process that includes checks for scope and appropriateness, as well as identifying information or potential for public harm. Once forwarded to Dryad, each dataset undergoes our usual rigorous quality controls to ensure that it is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reproducible (FAIR). Dryad’s experienced data curators also check that data are appropriate for sharing, and do not include personal identifying details or dual-use research of concern.

Integrating data availability into existing workflows helps to simplify the process for researchers and keep data sharing top-of-mind. “As preprint-first approaches to sharing new research become the norm in more disciplines, it’s even more important to ensure that the underlying data is there to evidence the conclusions.
